Apps that show running stats from Apple Health

Apple Health holds every run from your watch and apps, but it never adds them up. Here is what Health and Fitness show on their own, and what a reader app like Runtile, HealthFit or Gentler Streak adds.

Apple Health is the quiet hub of running on iPhone. Apple Watch writes every run to it. Strava, Garmin Connect, Nike Run Club, Coros, Polar and Suunto can all write to it too. Whatever you use to record, the run ends up in Health with its distance, duration, heart rate and route.

Health is a store, not a stats app. It shows you the pieces and leaves the adding up to you.

What Health and Fitness show

  • Each workout in full. Fitness opens any run with pace, heart rate, splits, elevation and the route on a map.
  • Rings, trends and awards. Move, exercise and stand, plus trends for a few metrics such as pace and distance across all workout types.
  • Walking + Running Distance. One daily number that mixes every walk with every run. Fine for movement, wrong for training.

What neither shows: a running only total for the month or year, personal bests found across runs, a year at a glance, how your easy days compare with your hard days, or how far your shoes have gone.

What a reader app adds

A reader app asks Health for read access to workouts and does the arithmetic. It does not record and it does not need an account, because everything it needs is already on the phone.

Runtile

Runtile turns the Running workouts in Health into totals for the week, month and year, compared with the same point before. It adds Highlights, personal bests from 1 km to the marathon with a top 10 for each, a year of tiles coloured by distance or pace, insights on easy and hard days and heart rate zones, and shoe mileage that assigns itself by date. Runs saved twice by two apps are merged. Free with no time limit, Pro for the whole history.

HealthFit

HealthFit reads the same workouts and focuses on the single activity and on export: detailed charts for one run, and one-tap upload to Strava, Garmin, TrainingPeaks and more. A one-off purchase. Less about totals across the year.

Gentler Streak

Gentler Streak reads all workout types from Health and turns them into a daily activity and recovery view, with a gentle tone and a subscription. It is about the whole of your movement rather than running specifically.

Athlytic and similar

Recovery and readiness apps read heart rate variability, resting heart rate and sleep from Health and give a daily readiness score. Useful next to a running app, not a running log.

How to get every run into Health

Apple Watch runs are there already. For other watches and apps there is a switch in their settings: Strava, Garmin Connect, Nike Run Club and Coros, Polar and Suunto. Once they write to Health, any reader app sees them.

Questions

Where are my runs in Apple Health?

Open Health, tap Browse, then Activity, then Workouts. Each run is a workout with its distance, duration, heart rate and, if it was recorded outdoors, a route. Running is one type among many.

Can Apple Health show my total running distance?

Not for running alone. Health totals Walking + Running Distance, which includes every walk. The running workouts are listed one by one, but there is no monthly or yearly sum. A reader app adds that.

Do reader apps change my Health data?

Only if you grant write access. Runtile asks to read workouts only and cannot change or delete anything in Health.

Start with your last year of runs.
