Best running apps for Apple Watch without a subscription

Most running apps charge monthly for stats you already own. Here are the ones that work with Apple Watch for free, what each gives you without paying, and where a one-off purchase makes sense.

Apple Watch records a good run on its own: GPS route, pace, heart rate, cadence, splits and elevation, all saved to Apple Health. What a running app adds is a way to look at those runs. Many of them put that behind a monthly fee. These do not.

Apple Fitness

Built in, free, and the place your Apple Watch runs land. Fitness shows each workout in full, closes your rings and hands out awards. What it lacks is a running total: distance is mixed with walking, there is no year view, no personal bests across runs and no shoes. Good for the run you just did, weak for the month you just ran.

Runtile

Runtile reads the runs already in Apple Health and shows the whole picture: how far you ran this week, month and year, a year of tiles, Highlights, personal bests from 1 km to the marathon, and shoe mileage that assigns itself. It records nothing and needs no account. The free plan has no time limit. Pro is $2.99 a month, $14.99 a year or $29.99 once, for earlier years, pace colours, all insights and unlimited shoes.

Strava, free plan

Strava is where runners share runs. The free plan records from the watch or phone, shows the feed, kudos and a basic activity page, and syncs to Apple Health. Segment leaderboards, the training log, relative effort and most charts need the subscription. If you want the community, use Strava free to record and share, and a reader app for the stats.

Nike Run Club

Free with no paid tier. Guided runs, a friendly coach voice and a clean run history, with an Apple Watch app. Its stats stop at the run and simple totals, and it keeps your runs in its own account. It can save to Apple Health, so other apps can read them.

HealthFit

A one-off purchase, not a subscription. HealthFit exports Apple Watch workouts to Strava, Garmin, TrainingPeaks and files, and shows detailed charts for each workout. It is the choice if you need your runs in many places. Less about totals and trends, more about the single workout and the export.

Garmin Connect, Coros, Polar Flow, Suunto

Free with the brand's watch. Each has a full training platform with totals, training load and records for the runs recorded on that watch. They do not read Apple Watch runs, so a runner with two watches sees two histories. Each one can save its runs to Apple Health, which puts everything in one place.

Which to pick

  • Just the watch and a clear picture of your running. Apple Fitness to record, Runtile to see totals, bests and shoes. Nothing to pay unless you want the whole history.
  • Friends and kudos. Strava free to record and share, saving to Health, and Runtile for the numbers Strava keeps behind the subscription.
  • Runs in many places. HealthFit for the export, once.
  • A Garmin or Coros as well as an Apple Watch. Turn on the Health sync in that brand's app, then use a Health reader so both watches count in one total.

Questions

Do I need any app besides the Workout app on Apple Watch?

No. The Workout app records runs with GPS, pace, heart rate and splits, and saves them to Apple Health. Extra apps add stats, training plans or community, they do not improve the recording.

Is Runtile really free?

Yes, with no time limit. Totals, goals, streaks, Highlights, personal bests, this year's tiles, one pair of shoes, sharing and six widgets are free. Pro adds earlier years, pace colours, all insights, race times and unlimited shoes, as a monthly, yearly or one-off purchase.

What about Strava for free?

Strava's free plan still records runs, shows the feed and gives kudos. Most analysis, segments leaderboards and the training log need a subscription.
